What is German A1?
A1 is the first CEFR level. Goethe-Institut describes A1 as the ability to understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases, introduce yourself and others, and interact simply when the conversation is slow and clear.
What is German A2?
A2 moves into routine situations and familiar topics. Learners work with simple direct exchanges of information and describe aspects of their background, surroundings and immediate needs.
What should a beginner study?
- Pronunciation and high-frequency vocabulary
- Personal introductions and everyday questions
- Numbers, dates, time, family, work and places
- Basic sentence structure and common grammar
- Short reading and listening activities
- Simple spoken and written communication
How to progress from A1 to A2
Build a steady routine rather than trying to memorise everything at once. A useful progression is vocabulary first, then short sentence patterns, listening repetition, guided speaking and short reading/writing tasks.
Keep a weekly review cycle. Revisit earlier vocabulary while introducing a smaller number of new words. This helps make active recall more reliable.
Can I take an official German exam?
The Goethe-Institut offers German examinations from A1 through C2. Official certification is separate from language classes, so learners should check the current exam information and registration rules directly with the relevant exam provider.
