Writing system
German
Uses the Latin alphabet. Beginners can focus heavily on pronunciation, vocabulary, word order and grammar.
Japanese
Uses hiragana and katakana plus kanji. Beginners therefore spend time learning scripts alongside vocabulary and grammar.
Grammar and sentence building
German and Japanese both reward careful grammar practice, but their sentence structures and grammatical systems are different. Learners should expect a real adjustment period rather than assuming English sentence patterns will transfer directly.
Which practice habits work well?
- Short daily vocabulary review
- Listening and repetition
- Reading aloud
- Spaced review of grammar patterns
- Frequent low-pressure speaking practice
How to choose your starting point
Choose based on your practical interests, available time and long-term motivation. German offers a clear CEFR-based progression such as A1 and A2; Japanese learners may choose a JLPT-oriented progression such as N5 and N4.
