Hiragana
Hiragana is a core phonetic script used widely for native Japanese words, grammatical endings and beginner reading. It is usually the first script beginners learn.
Katakana
Katakana is another phonetic script. It is frequently used for loanwords, foreign names and certain onomatopoeic or emphasis contexts. Learning it early makes everyday reading more accessible.
Kanji
Kanji are characters used in Japanese writing. Beginners typically learn a controlled set appropriate to their level rather than trying to learn everything at once.
A sensible beginner order
- Learn hiragana systematically.
- Learn katakana and practise reading both scripts.
- Build everyday vocabulary in kana.
- Add level-appropriate kanji gradually.
- Read short sentences every day.
