Online and distance education can both provide flexible routes to higher education, but the delivery model, learner support, examination process and regulatory requirements can differ. This guide explains the practical questions to ask before choosing a programme.
Online education and distance education are not identical
Online programmes are designed around digital delivery, typically using an institutional learning platform, online learning resources and scheduled or recorded digital academic activities. Open and Distance Learning (ODL) is a broader distance-learning model that may use printed or digital materials, learner-support arrangements and institution-specific contact or examination structures.
The correct choice depends on the programme, institution, learner profile and current regulatory status—not simply on whether a programme is advertised as “flexible”.

- Check the exact academic year/session and mode.
- Check whether the exact programme is recognised or entitled.
- Review eligibility and prohibited-programme rules where applicable.
- Read the university's official admission notice and fee schedule.
- For ODL/Online admission, follow the current DEB-ID and ABC-ID instructions.
What about fees?
There is no single “online degree fee” or “distance education fee”. Institutions may charge different amounts by programme, semester, student category and payment plan. Ask for the complete cost, including application, registration, examination and other applicable charges.
Which mode may suit a working professional?
A working professional may value asynchronous materials, recorded lectures, predictable assessments and a reliable LMS. Another learner may prefer an ODL model that is less dependent on continuous internet access. Compare the actual programme experience rather than choosing based only on the mode label.
