UGC-DEB Online & Distance Education Verification Guide for Students

Before joining an online or Open and Distance Learning programme, students should verify the current institution and programme information through official sources. The UGC Distance Education Bureau also provides DEB-ID guidance.

What is DEB-ID?

The UGC-DEB portal states that DEB-ID is a unique ID that learners must create when taking admission in ODL/Online programmes. The stated purpose is to help ensure learners are entering recognised/entitled HEIs and approved programmes.

What should a student verify?

  1. Check the exact university/HEI.
  2. Check the exact programme.
  3. Check the exact mode: online or ODL.
  4. Check the relevant academic session.
  5. Review eligibility and admission rules.
  6. Confirm fees and payment terms.
  7. Keep copies of official admission records.

ABC ID and DEB-ID

The UGC-DEB student portal says learners can create an ABC ID through DigiLocker and then use their ABC ID to create a DEB-ID on the DEB portal.

Why verification should happen before payment

University names and programme names can be similar across websites. Use the official DEB information and the university’s own admission pages before paying fees or submitting sensitive documents.
